GSC's dual valve spring kit is their most extreme valve spring option for the FA20. Dual springs feature a heavier outer spring that handles the primary load requirements together with a lighter inner spring for added stability and control. A slight interference between the two springs helps dampen spring oscillations for more accurate valve control at very high rpm. The combined springs offer a high closing pressure while increasing the opening range before coil bind vs. an equivalent single spring.
Upgraded valve springs are essential for controlling valve movement with more aggressive cam profiles. A higher spring rate is also necessary under high boost conditions due to the manifold pressures acting against the intake valve opposite of spring pressure. Spring harmonic frequencies must also be moved outside of the normal operating range to avoid negative effects. High spring pressures increase frictional losses and reduce spring life. It is recommended to select the valve spring according to the application and camshaft profile so as to ensure optimum valve control over the expected rpm range without introducing unnecessarily excessive spring forces.
